The Best Perfume For Older Women: My List of The Best 44 Perfumes

What’s the difference between 20 and 50 year old women, in a fragrance world? Every year you’re opening more and more scents. And the number of perfumes you can afford extends every year as well – it’s not about money only, but it’s about the new opportunities. Speaking about the best perfume for 50 year old woman (as well as the best perfume for 40 year old woman or 60 y.o.), it’s very easy to find something breathtaking, that would be the personal fragrance signature.

You know, I’m speaking from the side of my personal experience. On my 18-20, I preferred a tiny group of perfume notes and accords. I used to wear about 2-3 perfumes all year around, but with time goes on, my tastes have matured. For now, I don’t bind myself to the typical “girly” perfumes, and that’s really cool.

List of the 44 Best Perfumes For 40, 50 or 60 Year Old Woman

Personally I have to say “perfume for older women”. My personal opinion is that women don’t become older – they’re becoming aged, like a good wine or single-malt whiskey 🙂

Creating this article, I was thinking about how to make a list that would be readable and understandable for most people. At first, I was like “oh, I’ll divide my list by niche, luxury and mass-market fragrances”. But then I see – that wouldn’t be understandable. So finally I decided to create a list of the perfumes for older women depending on their age.

Before we go through, I must make a clear and important statement: when it comes to perfumes, don’t look at the age ONLY. It’s a common misconception – choosing a perfume, you should look at the whole personality of the future owner. What kind of notes does she like? What is her favorite brand? Where would she use this perfume? What season and weather – winter, fall, summer or spring? For the daytime or nighttime? What’s your budget? So on my side, I created a list for common navigation, but this list doesn’t pretend to be “the one and only opinion”.

The Best Perfume For 40 Year Old Woman

If you want to choose the best perfume for 40 year old woman, I recommend you one of the next:

  1. J’adore Eau de Parfum by Dior;
  2. Euphoria by Calvin Klein;
  3. Dior Poison;
  4. By the Fireplace, Maison Margiela;
  5. Opium by Yves Saint Laurent;
  6. Chanel № 5 L`Eau;
  7. Gucci Flora by Gucci;
  8. Givenchy Ange ou Demon;
  9. Narciso Rodriguez For Her;
  10. Versace Crystal Noir.

J’adore Eau de Parfum by Dior

White flowers, fruits, sweetness and aquatic notes of this perfume creating an unforgettable impression on all women since 1999. The most smelling notes are jasmine, pear, melon, lilli-of-the-valley, magnolia and tuberose.

Euphoria by Calvin Klein

Another one legendary perfume, created in 2005 by the team of notable perfumers. Since almost two decades, this perfume still loved by million of women around the world.

The main accords of the perfume are woody, flowery and powdery notes, and the most smelling notes are pomegranate, orchid, mahogany wood, amber and musk. Perfect for winter and fall season, for nighttime using.

Dior Poison

It’s hard to find a woman who doesn’t heard about this perfume. Ultimately strong sillage (up to 12 ft), lasts for days on clothing, and perfect composition of fruity notes, white flowers and amber. The most smelling notes of the Poison are plum, tuberose, incense, honey, berries, cinnamon and coriander.

What I like the most, is that this perfume fits almost every woman from 30 y.o. and older. What I don’t like (but that’s not a problem at all for me), is that this perfume is for the occasions only. I mean, you can’t wear it at the everyday working routine or at the gym. Hovewer, Poison is a stunning perfume for the cold winter and fall nights.

By the Fireplace, Maison Margiela

Have you ever wondered how it’s smells like in the luxury Swiss chalet, somewhere in the Alpine region? How it’s smells like a few days before Christmas eve? Right, “By the Fireplace” can give you a correct answer. I bought this perfume in the middle of November 2020, and that was one of the best fragrance purchases made for a few last years.

You know, I don’t see any sense to tell about accords and notes – all I can say is “this is how smells by the fireplace”. You wouldn’t find a perfume, that smells like a smoked woods with falling embers. In the same time, this perfume composition isn’t annoying.

The most smelling notes are chestnut, vanilla, guaiac wood, Peru balsam and cloves. Perfectly fits for winter and fall season.

Opium by Yves Saint Laurent

If you want to buy the best perfume for 40 year old woman, but don’t know for sure what she’d like to wear, look at the Opium by YSL. My personal recommendation: look at the original Opium version (Eau de Parfum or Eau de Toilette). There are a bunch of Opium flankers – more than 60 different perfumes like Black Opium, Vapeurs de Parfum, Black Opium Exotic Illusion, etc. You need an original Opium version of the 2009.

I can’t name this perfume matured or “old lady perfume”. This is a beautiful, unusual scent. It has a pronounced character, and like it’s owner, Opium is very melancholic and true to his principles. This is not a perfume that you could wear in any public place, but there is one place where it seems to me to fit well. This is a theater, where the chairs are covered in velvet, and gilded curls are all over the walls.

The most smelling notes are myrrh, opoponax, amber, patchouli, vanilla and tuberose. Mindblowing longevity and sillage.

This is a common list of the best perfumes for older women. But if you want to impress her, you can dig deeper into the niche perfumes, and look at the next options – pricey, but unusual and unique.

As for me, one of the prettiest niche compositions for 40 y.o. women are: Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle, Amouage Journey Woman, Pierre Guillaume (Parfumerie Generale) №6, Yatagan by Caron (yes, this is a male perfume, but looks impressive on some women), Back To Black By Kilian, Chergui by Serge Lutens, La Fille De Berlin by Serge Lutens, Amouage Sunshine, Narcotic Venus by Nassomato, Carnal Flower by Frederic Male, Tuberose Angelica by Jo Malone.

The Best Perfume For 50 Year Old Woman

If you’re looking for the best perfume for 50 year old woman, you can choose from the list created for 40 y.o. ladies. However, I also recommend to take a look at:

  1. Shalimar Eau De Parfum by Guerlain;
  2. Donna Eau De Parfum by Trussardi;
  3. Montblanc Signature;
  4. La Nuit Tresor by Lancome;
  5. English Pear and Freesia by Jo MAlone;
  6. Casilli by Parfums de Marly;
  7. 1881 for Women by Cerutti;
  8. Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent;
  9. Chloé Eau de Parfum by Chloé;
  10. Sì Eau de Parfum by Giorgio Armani.

Again, that’s the best POPULAR fragrance, but there are so many less-known perfumes that you can try! For instance, I recommend to try the next interesting niche perfumes – I bet you can easily find the best perfume for older women among this: Lexington Avenue by Bond No 9, Fire Island by Bond No. 9, Nuit de Cellophane by Serge Lutens, and Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian.

The Best Perfume For 60 Year Old Woman and Older

Again – there’s no difference between perfumes for 40, 50 or 60 y.o. woman. But if you’re looking for something you can impress with, I recommend to look at the next perfumes:

  1. Coco Eau de Parfum by Chanel;
  2. Climat by Lancome;
  3. Dia Woman by Amouage;
  4. Rouge Hermes Eau Delicate by Hermes;
  5. Must de Cartier by Cartier;
  6. Love in Paris by Nina Ricci;
  7. Izia by Sisley;
  8. Idylle Eau de Toilette by Guerlain;
  9. Eau du Soir by Sisley.

All of the fragrances mentioned above aren’t the typical “ old lady perfume list”. Those perfumes are wonderful, pretty, impressive, breathtaking. If I’ve missed something, or you’d like to see other perfumes, or get my personal opinion about some of the fragrance you’d like to buy – write in the comment section below, and let’s talk about it!

  1. What about Prada, the original fragrance. It is hard to find, but I love it! They accuse me of being a senior lady with the mentality of a 35 year old woman.

    1. Hi Lizzie! Which exactly of the Prada perfume you mean? BTW, I agree with you – Prada perfumes are good enough, and if we’re talking about perfumes for 35 y.o., I’d recommend Prada Prada and Infusion de Mimosa (reeeeally good one)
